searchcode

MCP server exposing searchcode.com's code-intelligence engine to agents. Six tools (code_analyze, code_search, code_get_file, code_file_tree, code_get_files, code_get_findings) let an agent overview, search, retrieve, and inspect code in any public git repository without cloning it locally. Powered by `scc` (300+ languages) and `cs` (code search).

When to use searchcode

Choose if

You're building an agent that needs to read, search, or analyze code in arbitrary public GitHub repositories without cloning them — code archaeology, dependency investigation, library evaluation, or credential scanning. Free + no-signup makes this a great default; cost comparison cited by vendor is ~$0.005/investigation vs ~$0.50 via clone-and-parse. Six tools cover overview, search, get-file, file-tree, multi-file fetch, and findings — broader than most code-intel MCPs.

Avoid if

You need private-repo access (use Sourcegraph Cody, GitHub Code Search via gh, or self-host searchcode), formal SLA / production support (this is beta with no signup), or non-git sources. Also avoid if your agent already has the repo cloned locally — `rg` / `ast-grep` will be faster than a hosted round-trip.

Risk Flags

  • MEDIUM maturity Vendor self-describes the service as in beta. Paid tiers are "planned long-term" but currently the free tier has no signup and no API key — meaning no SLA either.
  • LOW scope Public repositories only (GitHub and compatible git sources). For private repos you need an enterprise self-host deployment or a different code-intel server.
